The right choice

i think i am making the right choice but i guess i should run it past some people first. meds arent helping me and i dont think they ever will i want to explore more nautral ways to cope. and my current psychiatrist isnt helpling so soon i am going to stop seeing them and i dont plan on seeing a new one i also want to take myself off my meds because as i said they arent helpling and i want to go natural. i think this is the right choice for me  has anyone else gone natural? how did it go?

Re: The right choice

Hello @Eden1919 coming off meds can be quite traumatic, there can be withdrawal symptoms and a much worsening of your condition, particularly if you have been on them for a long time, one med I came off took 12 months of tapering due to withdrawal symptons though I think technically they call it discontinuation syndrome, I think it would depend on your diagnosis and its severity as to if using natural remedies may be able to take over, I have tried many natural products and have not found them helpful, but we are all different and you may get relief from something, again depending on your diagnosis, it is also very expensive to go with natural products depending on how many you use it can be ridiculously expensive or do you mean natural as in exercise, meditation etc? I think if you are able to stay in the treatment of a psychiatrist it is better, if you have acute bad episodes, they can help, if you are on your own, managing that becomes more difficult, are you able to switch to another psychiatrist? I tried 2 before I found one that I am comfortable with, does your clinic have peer reviews? in which all the Dr's get together and try to nut out a different and hopefully better strategy, also you can see a psychiatrist at the black dog clinic and they can make recommendations for your own psychiatrist to follow, the advantage there is they have a mountain of experience and a lot of backup knowledge,  accurate diagnosis is very important.

Re: The right choice

I am diagnosed mainly with Bipolar 1, OCD and BPD i actually have been to see the black dog institute already i have not been on these meds for very long so that isnt an issue. i dont trust my psychiatrist and i dont think i trust them as a profession in general i hate my meds i hate them and i want off them i want to be free but i cant do that with meds i am actually doubting there is anything wrong with me at all i think maybe i am just a more sensitive person in a way. i want to not be locked down by chemicals anymore they are making me sick too and that feels awful i dont know i just need to be free.

Re: The right choice

@Eden1919, why don't you see a different doctor and get them to supervise you going off your meds? You need to do it really really slowly cause coming off them quickly can have adverse effects, and also rebound effect that look like you could be getting sick again and it's not the case.
I get not wanting to be on meds, and maybe its the right thing for you, but be careful. You don't want to risk getting sick again.
When was coming off antipsychotics it took me almost 8 months to come off them completely. I would recommend setting yourself a similar goal time-wise.

Re: The right choice

there arent many doctors where i live and i dont think i could find one that would help me it is complicated. i just cant deal with being on them anymore.

Re: The right choice

hi @Eden1919 i would really reccomend that you see anoher gp or psychiatrist but it really is up to you.

for natural remedies id suggest seeing a naturopath as they specialise in herbs and suppliments and things

Re: The right choice

If you do decide to go off them, I really recommend going slowly, don't just go off them straight away. But I totally get wanting to be off them. I found I felt the same way, but then my doc let me try a few different types till I found ones that didn't give me side effects.
Have you ever seen a psychologist? I kind of envision as that being the 'natural' option when treating mental illness. They can really help and I know for some types of mental illness, medication isn't the best option, therapy is a better treatment option. Does that appeal to you?

Re: The right choice

Hello @Eden1919

If you do decide to go off them, I really recommend going slowly, how long hve you been on them ?

are they anti depreessants or anti anxiety meds , we can`t say the names of the meds

Re: The right choice

i am currently seeing a psychologist i do plan to taper off them if i choose to go off them i have been on an antipsychotic for 6 months and a mood stabliser for nearly 2 months i am on meds for bipolar if that helps.
