Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

I don't know what to say anymore.  I'm waiting for my next appointment so that I can get an appropriate counsellor.

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

It is surprising to me, but with all that's been going on, the people around me (aside from sane.org) have not recommended a counsellor, they just want me to automatically change the way I think by saying I'm mental, as though I can change it on the spot.

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

The good ol' 'snap out of it' YUK!

You wouldn't believe how common this ignorance and misunderstanding is. We even have a whole discussion, called '9 things not to say to someone with a mental illness' where members have listed the terrible things that have been said to them or they have heard said about others.

I think it's great your stepping out and looking after yourself.

We're here if you need us!

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

Well I went to the doctor and asked for a counsellor, which he disregarded and just increased my meds.  I explained that I thought it would be beneficial to talk to someone about my problems and how to cope with things, but he did not even reply, just asked me other questions not related to counselling then did not refer back to my request for a counsellor again.

What do I have to say to get a counsellor? Im serious on this because the words im using do not seem to be working.  Im wanting ongoing help with things but all I have is more medication.  I honestly believe that some support would mean that I may be able to take less meds, not more.

I'm reading about other stories on sane.org and I did check out the 9 things not to say to a mental paitient, and it's making me more motivated to find support, but I'm starting to feel that by the time I do get to speak to someone it won't be worth the effort and I'll just be sitting there thinking #$@& you.

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

Hi Amanda

I can really understand your anger at not being listened to by your doctor.

I want to encourage you to keep taking the steps to get the kind of support you actually need.

I am wondering, when you say 'doctor' are you referring to a psychiatrist or a general practitioner? It might be worth considering trying a different doctor, if your current doctor is not providing you the help you need. Of course, this is easier with a GP than with a psychiatrist.

I wonder if it is possible for you to see another doctor who is willing to provide you with a Mental Health Care Plan and can refer you to a suitable counsellor. You can also use the Austalian Psychological Society Website to search for Psychologists who have experience in certain issues. http://www.psychology.org.au/findapsychologist/

It also may be worth calling the Sane Helpline on 1800 187 263 Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm to chat about the best way to access a suitable counsellor.

All the best,

Victor
