@ENKELI I don't think R U OK Day itself is tokenistic. I think it is a great initiative to encourage people to look out for each other. But I do think workplaces implement it as a tick-box activity, so they can say they care about the mental health of their employees even though they ignore it every other day of the year. And similarly, individuals such as my workmate say/send a throw away message asking if you are OK which is insincere and only done because 'that's what you do on R U OK day'.

@Jynx Yes, I agree about the stigma and spreading awareness. I have been trying to get my workplace to provide further education about mental health/illness to improve understanding of the difficulties that individuals like us face silently every day. I do this through anonymous staff surveys every time they are sent out. I feel like some things are now considered socially-acceptable, such as autism, and others definitely are not, like OCD in my case. Even social anxiety is down-played as 'everyone gets nervous' with no understanding of just how absolutely immobilising it is. You can't discuss the root-cause of your mental health struggles without the perception of being a weirdo.

@Alonely I get what you're saying. I noticed it depended a lot on the staff - one workplace I was at didn't do anything about it but the manager I shared an office space with did. She made sure we were okay and agreed that it had to be an every day thing, if we saw our colleagues struggling go and ask if they were okay and go from there. I also noticed that non profit organizations were more likely to take on the sentiment. The last place I worked for I have no doubt probably didn't even know how to spell R U OK!
It is sad that workplaces use it as a tick box activity - makes the head bods feel good about themselves yet neglecting those who do live with mental health issues.
I hope you're okay and that your weekend goes well for you 🙂

@Glisten my dear tomaatii, you are forever teaching me new stuff. I hadn't heard of Maslow so thank you for that.
As for ble*ding the same, here is a song by Mandisa, who was on American Idol. Simon Cowell made a crack about her weight, saying they needed a bigger stage. Mandisa responded by saying "Yes you hurt me but I want you to know I forgive you." I wish we could all live like that. (RIP Mandisa.)
May you have a lovely Friday and enjoy your weekend xo
