The system is broken for juveniles in Queensland and the Northern Territory.
And on this case. for adults in New South Wales.

That's a really hard read @Dimity but absolutely highlights the gaping holes in the system

Yes it's horrifying @Ru-bee . And I read 50% of the psychiatrists in NSW public health are resigning so heaven knows what the answer is - perhaps a massive injection of funding . But that wouldn't change the attitude of individual prison guards.

@Dimity @Patches59 @TAB @Ru-bee
the coroner found. “This inquest highlights that [Corrective Services NSW] is not and should not be placed in a position to care for a mentally ill person.”
Can anyone tell me if NSW Corrective Services has implemented any changes as a result of the coroner’s findings?

Pshaw @Glisten that's piffle. It's common knowledge a lot of mentally ill folk end up homeless and/or incarcerated. And prisoners have no entitlement to Medicare for anything let alone MH. Provision of health services can vary depending on prison service and if it's a privately operated prison as is the case in some states.

My apologies @Glisten I didn't mean to aim that last remark at you. I'm upset at the ongoing victimisation and stigmatisation of people needing MH support.

This year there was a big inquest into juvenile detention in WA too.
It is very sad what has become of the system nationally. Too many kids die due to negligence and straight up abuse, mostly stemming from the "guards"
As a nation we could definitely do better. Most of the kids need love and support. Most have been through horrendous situation that need therapy and rehabilitation not isolation and jail. It sad that some actually advocate to lower the age in which they can be incarcerated. In WA there was a big moment to raise the age and have more accountability on the parents, especially in fv situations.
